Kick off MODEMA – Model and Demonstration Network for Agroforestry in Germany

The kick-off event for the MODEMA Model and Demonstration Network for Agroforestry in Germany (funding code: 2222NR061) took place in Weimar on 22nd October 2024.

The project is funded by the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture and the Agency for Renewable Resources (Fachagentur Nachwachsende Rohstoffe, FNR). It is centrally coordinated by DeFaF e.V.

Institute for Applied Material Flow Management of the Trier University of Applied Sciences) is also part of MODEMA with the AGROfloW project and was present and on stage at the event, which was attended by around 100 participants.

This was preceded by the meeting of the project consortium, at which all project partners discussed the next steps to be taken in order to achieve the goals set in the best possible way during the funding period from June 2024 to the end of May 2027, so that the desired extension until the end of May 2029 is also approved. During this period, agroforestry in Germany will be driven forward through the creation of best practice agroforestry areas that inspire imitation, the expansion of knowledge on agroforestry land use and even stronger networking between practice, science and administration.

Around 30 farms in three model regions across Germany are involved in MODEMA. The farms either already manage agroforestry areas or are establishing new systems as part of the project. The range of agroforestry systems and tree species is wide. Both arable and grassland sites are being researched, and poplars, fruit and nut trees are being planted.

With the AGROfloW project, the IfaS will work with the project partners to collect data on the economics of agroforestry systems in order to be able to make better and more realistic statements on the costs of establishing and managing agroforestry systems.
