On the AFaktive pilot site, swales were installed.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\"><strong>Swales <\/strong>are shallow wide channels covered in vegetation that have different functions for water management, from <strong>erosion control<\/strong> and <strong>water filtration<\/strong>, to <strong>flood protection<\/strong> \u2013 especially thanks to <strong>slow water infiltration<\/strong>. <strong>Agroforestry <\/strong>systems have similar water management functions acting, inter alia, on both <strong>erosion \/ flood protection <\/strong>and <strong>water retention<\/strong>. Therefore, <strong>agroforestry and swales structures complement each other<\/strong> and \u2013 combined \u2013 increase the water performance of a particular agricultural field.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">On this field, an <strong>agroforestry system will be implemented in early 2025<\/strong>. In this way, the AFaktive team will be able to observe the combined effect of agroforestry and swales.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"wp-block-paragraph\">Furthermore, the activities in Voeren are also a nice example of how the <strong>local pilot level <\/strong>and the <strong>regional level <\/strong>can result in an <strong>interesting blended approach<\/strong>.
